This article is written according to the legal status current as of: 2024-01-12

What are public works?

The term public works refers to employment of an unemployed person at the works organized by district offices (except for works organized by district labour offices), commune offices,  social welfare centers or non-government organizations dealing, according to their statutes, with issues related to environment protection, culture, education, sport and tourism, health care, unemployment and social welfare, as well as waterway companies and their associations, if their works are financed or co-financed from the means of territorial self-government, the state budget, target funds, non-government organizations, waterway companies and their associations.

Who is eligible for public works?

Whether the labour office grants you this kind of support or not depends on type of profile established for you during an interview when a client advisor analyses your situation and chances on the labour market and on the individual action plan tailored to your needs.

How long may public work last?

You may be assigned for public works for the period of up to 6 or up to 12 months.

What should you do if you want to be employed in public works?

You should appear in your district labour office and ask for the possibility of such employment. The decision whether you will be employed in public works or not depends mostly on the funds.

Why is it worth being assigned for public works?

If you carry out  public works

  • the minimum remuneration for work is guaranteed to you by law (see the current rates),
  • it means that you have a contract of employment,
  • you have right to annual leave, child-care leave, etc.,
  • you have all the rights that the Labour Code guarantees.

Useful information

The district labour office may refund to an employer a previously agreed-upon part of costs connected with employing the assigned unemployed.
